Job summary

Following developments in our Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) service, the Trust are now keen to expand their consultant numbers to provide modern, high-quality patient care. The successful candidate would be encouraged to continue development in their area of expertise of Emergency Medicine including SDEC.

The successful applicant's principal place of work will be Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Woolwich. Other work locations including off site working may be agreed in your Job Plan where appropriate, e.g. for supporting professional activities and some direct clinical care such as Audits and Quality Improvement Projects. The successful applicant will generally be expected to undertake the Programmed Activities at the principal place of work or other locations agreed in the Job Plan. Exceptions will include travelling between work sites (if required) and attending official meetings away from the workplace. The successful applicant may be required to work at any site within your employing organisation, including new sites.

Main duties of the job

Clinical Responsibilities

Ensure optimum care of all patients attending the Emergency Department including reception, triage, resuscitation, diagnosis, initial treatment and disposal of all emergencies.

Set standards and develop systems and guidelines for the clinical and operational management of patients.

Supporting the Clinical Director of Emergency Department in the delivery of timely, high-quality care in accordance with the Trust and national priorities.

Develop and implement rolling training audit and quality Improvement Projects

Conduct the ward rounds of patients managed by the emergency department

Actively participate in and champion and drive the ED led generic SDEC service.

Assist with the development of Major Incident plans and related work.

Medical Education and teaching

The Consultant will participate in the professional supervision, support, organisation and delivery of formal teaching programs for all staff including:

  • Specialist/Specialty Registrars, Senior Clinical Fellows, Staff Grades and F2s/SHOs/ST1-2s.
  • Nursing staff specifically the Emergency Nurse Practitioners, Advance Care Practitioners (ACPs), and RSCNs working with children in the department.
  • Medical students.
  • Ambulance Personnel.
  • Physician Associate students.
  • Undertake appropriate 'mentoring', appraisal and Educational / Clinical Supervision of junior medical staff.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Medical degree, MBBS or equivalent
  • Fellow of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine or equivalent
  • FRCEM or equivalent
  • ATLS or equivalent
  • ALS or equivalent
  • EPLS / APLS or equivalent
  • Full and Specialist registration (and with a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC) or be eligible for registration within six months of interview.
  • Applicants that are UK trained, must also be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview. Applicants that are non-UK trained, they will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT and be on the GMC Specialist Register/Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR) application in a non-CCT specialty awaiting approval

Desirable

  • Instructor status in ATLS or ALS or APLS course/s
IT skills

Essential

  • Ability to use Microsoft office packages, e.g. MS Word, Excel, Access & PowerPoint
  • Ability to use patient information systems

  • Must have undertaken and completed audit projects
  • Ability to supervise audit projects

Teaching Experience

Essential

  • Experience and interest in undergraduate teaching
  • Skill and ability in formal and informal
  • Educational supervision accreditation

Desirable

  • An understanding of current issues in medical education and training
  • Previous experience in trainee Supervision
  • Higher teaching qualification
  • Presentations at National or International meetings
  • Publications in peer reviewed journals
Management and Adminstration Experience

Essential

  • Managerial capability along with good leadership qualities/skills
  • Ability to organize efficient and smooth running of ED
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, Influencing and negotiation skills
  • Good administrative skills
  • Dedication to clinical service provision

Desirable

  • Regional or national management course and/or qualification
  • Familiar with current structure of NHS and conversant with ongoing initiatives and modernisation programme
