Job summary
We are seeking an enthusiastic and experienced Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon specialising in Glaucoma to join the internationally renowned Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. This substantive full-time post offers the opportunity to deliver high-quality glaucoma care across Northwick Park, Brent Cross and City Road, working within one of the largest and most innovative glaucoma services in the world. The successful candidate will combine specialist clinical and surgical practice with service development, leadership, teaching and supervision responsibilities.
Main duties of the job
- Provide expert medical and surgical glaucoma care in outpatient, virtual and theatre settings.
- Deliver consultant-led care across Moorfields North and City Road services.
- Lead and support the development of glaucoma diagnostic and virtual review pathways.
- Perform advanced glaucoma surgery, including complex surgical procedures.
- Supervise, teach and mentor fellows, trainees, specialist optometrists and multidisciplinary staff.
- Participate in clinical governance, audit, quality improvement and service innovation.
- Contribute to research, education and training within the Trust and wider ophthalmology community.
- Participate in the Moorfields low-frequency glaucoma consultant on-call rota.

Job responsibilities
The post holder will join a highly regarded consultant team within the glaucoma service and will be responsible for the delivery of safe, effective and patient-centred glaucoma care across multiple Moorfields sites. The role includes face-to-face clinics, virtual review clinics, theatre sessions and leadership of glaucoma diagnostic pathways.
The successful candidate will support the continued expansion of consultant-led glaucoma services and play a key role in developing innovative models of care to improve access, efficiency and patient outcomes. Working closely with consultants, divisional management teams, specialist optometrists and multidisciplinary colleagues, the post holder will contribute to service planning, governance and continuous improvement initiatives.
Responsibilities include clinical leadership, supervision of junior medical staff, participation in audit and appraisal processes, research and teaching activities, and active involvement in maintaining the high standards of care for which Moorfields is recognised internationally.
Person specification
EDUCATION & QUALIFICATIONS
Essential
- FRCOphth / MRCOphth or equivalent ophthalmic qualification.
- CCT in Ophthalmology or equivalent ophthalmic training (or be within 6 months of CCT date).
- Full GMC Registration (with a 'Licence to Practise').
- Be on or eligible for the GMC specialist register, or be within 6 months of entry.
Desirable
- Completion of, or studies towards Higher Degree (MD/PhD)
FURTHER TRAINING & KNOWLEDGE
Essential
- Be near to OR completed Higher Specialist Training in Ophthalmology.
- Awareness of current issues affecting the NHS
- Should have received training in clinical supervision as defined by the GMC.
- Completion of 2 years recognised post-CCT glaucoma fellowship training
- Experience of innovation and management of High Volume Ophthalmic Diagnostic Hubs
Desirable
- Prior Consultant Level Experience as a Glaucoma Specialist
- Clinical leadership training
SKILLS & ABILITY
Essential
- High level of glaucoma surgical experience including filtration, tube and revision surgeries
- Ability to lead & coordinate clinical and multi-professional teams.
- Excellent surgical competence & skills in modern cataract surgery.
Desirable
- Excellent teaching & presentation skills.
- Management skills & experience.
EXPERIENCE
Essential
- Experience of teaching at postgraduate level
- Active involvement in Service Improvement and Audit
Desirable
- Experience of public & patient engagement.
- Clinical leadership and management experience in developing and delivering new services.
- Involvement in clinical leadership roles such a participation in QIPP projects & service improvement projects.
- Management innovation experience
