Job summary

We are delighted to welcome applications for a Core Clinical Fellow in General Surgery based at Wexham Park Hospital. This role is ideal for doctors at Resident Doctor (formally known as SHO) level (FY2/FY3/ST1-2 or equivalent), particularly those looking to undertake a rewarding and well-supported F3 year.

You will join a friendly, forward-thinking General team in a busy and well-established hospital, gaining exposure to a broad range of acute and elective General surgical care while developing your clinical confidence in a supportive environment.

As a resident doctor within the team, you will be actively involved in ward care, acute admissions, outpatient activity, and the on-call rota, with excellent opportunities to attend theatre and build procedural skills.

The department is committed to education and development, offering strong senior support, access to teaching, and opportunities to get involved in audit and quality improvement work. Main duties of the job

The Trust Doctor post at Wexham Park Hospital will provide experience of emergency and elective urology care with on-calls in Urology and General Surgery.

The post will be supervised with opportunities to develop clinical and surgical skills, while improving experience of teaching, quality improvement, research and leadership.

Job responsibilities

The post will involve:

  • Working with the consultant and registrar to review and treat General surgery inpatients at Wexham Park Hospital.
  • Opportunities to attend clinics, diagnostic lists and theatre lists
  • An average 1:7 full shift rota covering urology and general surgery
  • Work under consultant supervision, with an educational development plan to improve knowledge, clinical skills, teaching and quality improvement experience.

Qualifications

Essential

  • MB BS or equivalent
  • GMC registration
Specific Competencies

Essential

  • Able to communicate clearly in written and spoken English
  • Able to establish good working relations with patients, carers and multi-disciplinary colleagues
  • Keeps professional knowledge and skills up to date
  • Able to manage time and prioritise workload
  • Demonstrates initiative, enthusiasm and common sense
  • Respects and promotes individual's rights, interests, preferences, beliefs and cultures
  • Understands the principles of patient confidentiality and data protection

Desirable

  • Experience in managing urological patients, including catheterisation
Professional/Specialist/Functional Experience

Essential

  • Satisfactory completion of foundation programme training (inc FY2) or equiv
  • Competent in basic procedures e.g. CPR, infection control, physical examination, history taking, etc
  • Able to prioritise clinical need
  • Aware of own limitations, consults senior colleagues appropriately and knows when to ask for help
  • Able to discuss treatment options with patients in a way they can understand
