Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen on Ward 19 to join the senior nursing team, as we will be extending to 28 medical beds as we head into the winter period.

Within ward 19, we work closely as a multidisciplinary team to provide care and support to our patients who experience a diverse range of medical conditions. Our focus is to ensure the delivery of high quality of care alongside a wide range of treatments, to enable our patients to recover from their acute episodes of illness and achieve the best possible outcomes, enabling timely discharge to the appropriate placements.

Candidates will be expected to have at least two years band 5 experience within an acute setting.

You should be a calm and approachable nurse who is wanting to develop their leadership skills. You will be expected to assist in managing the team and ensuring that our patients receive an excellent standard of care and to respond from feedback.

You will receive training appropriate to your role and will be supported with future development opportunities.

Main duties of the job

Designated to take regular charge of the ward/department in the absence of the Ward/Departmental Manager.

Ensure appropriate use of financial and other resources supporting the ward manager in maintaining a balanced budget.

Act as an expert practitioner within the appropriate speciality, participating in direct patient care and demonstrating an advanced level of practice and knowledg.

Ensure the effective and timely admission and discharge of patientsAssist in creating a therapeutic environment which meets the needs of patients, relatives and carers.

Assist in promoting a critical, analytical approach to the delivery of care and implementing changes to improve systems.

Participate in audits and implement change, based on audited outcomesAct as a preceptor and mentor to junior staff.

Lead the team in the absence of the Ward or Department ManagerParticipate in the recruitment, selection and appraisals of junior staffAssist in maintaining discipline and in dealing with staff problems in a supportive way, embracing all aspects of Human Resource policies and guidelines.

Continuously update own skills and knowledge and maintain awareness of clinical issues.

Qualifications, Specific Experience & Training

Essential

  • 1st Level Registered Nurse (relevant to area of work)
  • Relevant diploma / degree or due for completion within 12 months
  • Minimum of three years post-registration experience of which two years should be at Primary Nurse or equivalent

Desirable

  • Management qualification
  • Recognised teaching qualification
Knowledge and Skills

Essential

  • Relevant Clinical knowledge/experience of the speciality

Desirable

  • Student nurse assessor
  • Evidence of ability to act as a preceptor/mentor to new staff
  • Evidence of involvement in producing teaching strategies/packages
