Job summary
The Team Leader holds day-to-day operational and clinical leadership responsibility for the diagnostic endoscopy unit, ensuring safe, effective, patient-centred care is delivered consistently across all sites. The postholder is accountable for workforce planning and staffing resilience, budget and resource management, clinical governance and JAG/GRS accreditation, and the education and development of the nursing/ODP team deputising for the Head of Endoscopy as required.
Main duties of the job
This role sits above the Senior Endoscopy Nurse/ODP tier described in the Endoscopy Nurse/ODP job description. Where a Senior Endoscopy Nurse/ODP demonstrates the capability to take charge of a list or shift, the Team Leader carries substantive, continuous accountability for the unit as a whole its safety, performance, people and regulatory compliance and is the point of escalation Senior Endoscopy Nurses/ODPs work to when taking charge in their absence.

Job responsibilities
3. Core Leadership & Operational Responsibility AreasThe Team Leader holds accountability across the following domains, working closely with the Head of Endoscopy and providing the escalation route for all clinical and operational issues arising within the unit.

Clinical & Patient Safety Leadership
- Acts as the senior clinical decision-maker and escalation point for the unit, including complex, high-risk or emergency situations.
- Leads the immediate response to clinical incidents, ensuring appropriate escalation and investigation.
- Ensures safety-critical standards (safety checklist, sedation safety, consent) are consistently met across all lists and sites.
Workforce Planning & Staffing
- Owns rota design, skill-mix and real-time staffing decisions across the unit, including escalation of unresolved shortfalls to the Head of Endoscopy.
- Leads recruitment, induction, performance management, sickness/absence management and appraisal for the team.
- Builds staffing resilience and succession planning, including development of Senior Endoscopy Nurses/ODPs towards Team Leader-level responsibility.
Resource, Stock & Budget Management
Oversees stock control and procurement decisions across the unit.
Manages relationships with decontamination, estates and procurement to minimise service disruption.
Quality, Governance & Accreditation
Assist the Head of Endoscopy in Maintaining the unit's JAG accreditation, ensuring the clinical quality, patient experience, workforce and training domains are maintained and evidenced in line with the GRS.
Leads the unit's audit and clinical governance programme, contributing to relevant meetings.
Completes incident investigation, assists in complaints handling and closure of resulting action plans.
Shares learnings with the team, ensuring actions are embedded into practice.
Decontamination & Water Safety Oversight
Holds unit-level accountability for decontamination compliance and the water testing/sampling programme, escalating and resolving adverse results with relevant manager.
Ensures equipment servicing, validation and downtime are managed without compromising patient safety.
Education, Training & Development
- Owns the unit's training and competency framework (JETS, mandatory training, local sign-off), ensuring compliance across the team.
- Leads preceptorship, mentorship and student placement provision within the unit.
- Identifies development needs and supports staff progression, including recognition of Senior Endoscopy Nurse/ODP status.
Service Improvement & Strategic Contribution
- Contributes to service planning, capacity/demand management and waiting-list/turnaround performance.
- Contributes and supports quality improvement initiatives and new pathway implementation.
- Deputises for the Head of Endoscopy at internal and external meetings as required.
Performance in this role is assessed against unit-wide leadership and operational KPIs, reviewed at appraisal alongside the unit's accreditation, governance and workforce reporting.

Unit-wide patient comfort, safety-checklist and discharge-criteria compliance (as set out in the Endoscopy Nurse/ODP Tier 1 KPIs) is maintained in aggregate across all staff.

Registration & Education
- Current professional registration NMC (Registered Nurse) or HCPC (Operating Department Practitioner).
- Significant post-registration experience in endoscopy, including senior/charge nurse or equivalent responsibility.
- JAG ENDO1 (or equivalent) completed; JETS Level 2 completed or being actively worked towards.
- Recognised leadership/management qualification (e.g. NHS Leadership Academy programme, ILM/CMI, or relevant degree).
- Non-medical prescribing or advanced clinical practice qualification.
Experience
- Demonstrable experience taking charge of a clinical area/unit, managing staffing and resolving operational pressures in real time.
- Experience of budget, stock or resource management.
- Experience managing a team, including recruitment, appraisal and performance management.
- Experience assisting with JAG/GRS accreditation or an equivalent quality-accreditation process.
Clinical & Operational Skills
Expert clinical competence across the full endoscopy pathway (admissions, procedure room, recovery, discharge, decontamination and water sampling). Sound understanding of clinical governance, incident management and audit methodology.
Experience leading service improvement or change initiatives.
Leadership & Management
Proven ability to lead, motivate and performance-manage a multidisciplinary team. Confident decision-maker under pressure, with sound judgement in escalation and risk management.
Experience deputising for a service/department manager.
Audit & Governance
Experience leading or co-leading clinical audits and contributing to governance processes.
Experience presenting audit/quality outcomes to senior stakeholders or external assessors (e.g. JAG assessors).
Communication & Teamwork
Excellent written and verbal communication; able to build effective relationships across multidisciplinary teams, patients and external stakeholders (e.g. estates, procurement, accreditation bodies).
Experience delivering formal presentations or reports to senior management.

- Registered healthcare professional with appropriate endoscopy experience and clinical credibility
- Educated to degree level or able to demonstrate equivalent experience, with evidence of recent professional development

- Proven leadership or managerial experience, with the ability to lead, motivate, support and hold staff to account
- Experience of staff management, recruitment, induction, supervision, appraisals, performance management and HR processes
- Excellent communication, influencing, decision-making and conflict resolution skills
- Ability to manage staffing levels, rotas, skill mix, resources, stock, equipment and operational priorities effectively
- Knowledge of equipment management, servicing, maintenance, sourcing and procurement processes
- Basic IT skills and ability to work with online programmes such as SystmOne
