English Teacher – SEMH School
Swindon, Wiltshire | Full-Time | Monday to Friday | Term Time Only | Pay to Scale
A specialist school for students with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) in Swindon is seeking a dedicated English Teacher to join their team.
The school supports students aged 7–17 years with a range of complex learning needs. All students have Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) as their primary need, alongside additional diagnoses and needs including ADHD, Autism/ASC, dyslexia, dyscalculia and speech and language difficulties. Some students have also experienced significant childhood trauma.
The school takes a trauma-informed, holistic approach, working to remove barriers to learning, support emotional wellbeing and promote healing alongside academic attainment.
About the Role
As an English Teacher, you will:
Plan and deliver engaging English lessons for students aged 7–17
Adapt teaching and learning to meet a range of SEN, SEND and SEMH needs
Support students to develop their literacy, communication and confidence
Create a calm, structured and inclusive learning environment
Build positive, trusting relationships with students
Use trauma-informed and nurturing approaches to support engagement and emotional regulation
Monitor progress and adapt teaching to individual learning needs
Work closely with teaching assistants, pastoral staff and the wider team
Contribute to the wider holistic development of students alongside their academic attainment
What We’re Looking For
Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or relevant teaching qualification
Experience teaching English, ideally within secondary or specialist education
Previous experience working with SEN, SEND or SEMH students is highly desirable
Strong understanding of differentiated teaching and individual learning needs
Calm, patient and consistent approach
Strong classroom management and relationship-building skills
Ability to adapt teaching to students with complex needs
Commitment to a trauma-informed and holistic approach to education
Resilience, empathy and a genuine passion for supporting young people
Previous experience as an English Teacher, SEN Teacher, SEND Teacher, SEMH Teacher or Specialist Teacher would be beneficial.
