Job summary
The General Practitioner Non-Executive Director (GP NED) will play a key role in the governance and clinical leadership of Nottingham City GP Alliance (NCGPA).Acting as an independent advisor to the Board, the GP NED will bring front-line general practice insight, clinical credibility and professional judgement to support safe, high-quality and sustainable primary care across Nottingham.The post-holder must be a General Practitioner working at a shareholding NCGPA member practice.The GP NED will chair the Clinical Governance and Quality Board Committee, providing leadership and assurance on quality, safety and improvement. They will also provide Board-level oversight of research and education activity, in partnership with the Medical Director, and hold responsibilities allocated as part of the agreed governance and regulatory nominations that support NCGPA's service activities.NEDs are expected to challenge constructively, offer fresh perspectives and provide balanced, independent judgement as equal members of the Board.This role is part-time and requires attendance at:o Quarterly Board meetingso Quarterly Clinical Governance and Quality Committee meetingso Development discussions and occasional additional meetingsMeetings may be held in person or virtually.NEDs must maintain independence and declare any conflicts of interest in line with organisational policy.
Main duties of the job
Governance and Oversight
- Ensure effective governance and compliance with statutory, regulatory and professional requirements.
- Contribute to the organisation's strategy, ensuring alignment with its vision, mission, and values.
- Contribute to effective corporate and clinical governance.
- Provide independent clinical leadership and assurance to the Board.
- Support the development of organisational strategy and provide independent input into decision-making.
- Support the Board in holding the executive to account for quality, safety and outcomes.
- Chair the Clinical Governance and Quality Board Committee.
- Support alignment with NCGPA strategic priorities and member practice needs.
- Champion education and learning that supports workforce sustainability and high-quality care.
Stakeholder Engagement
- Act as an advocate for NCGPA, representing the organisation to key stakeholders and partners.
- Work collaboratively with Board members, senior leaders, and external partners to develop and maintain effective relationships.
- Build constructive relationships with system partners where appropriate.
Financial and Risk Management
- Provide oversight of financial planning, resource allocation, finance and risk management to ensure sustainability.
- Offer purposeful, constructive scrutiny and challenge.
Championing Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion
- Promote a culture of inclusivity and ensure that the organisation reflects the diverse needs of Nottingham's communities.

- Strong understanding of primary care clinical governance and quality.
- Experience of clinical leadership and professional accountability.
- Understanding of NHS regulatory, assurance and quality frameworks.
- An understanding of corporate governance, compliance, and risk management.
- Experience of supporting organisations through change, with a focus on sustainability and efficiency.
- A sound understanding of the challenges and opportunities within primary care and the NHS system.
- Ability to see the bigger picture, identify trends, and provide innovative solutions.
- Strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with diverse stakeholders and teams.
- Experience of chairing or contributing to governance or quality committees.
- Knowledge of Nottinghams healthcare system and the needs of its communities.
- Experience in organisational development or workforce transformation.
- Previous Board or nonexecutive experience.
