Health Care Assistant - Coalbrook Surgery
Job summary
We are looking for an enthusiastic and compassionate Healthcare Assistant to join our friendly GP practice team. The successful candidate will support our clinical team in delivering high-quality patient care, carrying out a range of HCA duties including clinical observations, phlebotomy, ECGs, health checks and supporting long-term condition reviews.
This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated HCA to develop their skills within primary care, working closely with GPs, Practice Nurses and the wider multidisciplinary team. The role will also include supporting minor surgery clinics.
Main duties of the job
We are looking for an enthusiastic, caring and motivated Healthcare Assistant to join our friendly GP practice team. The successful candidate will work alongside GPs, Practice Nurses and the wider clinical team to provide high-quality patient care.
The role will involve supporting routine HCA duties within general practice, with support for our Minor Surgery Clinic.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
Undertake routine Healthcare Assistant duties including:
Venepuncture (blood taking)
Recording blood pressure, pulse, temperature, oxygen saturations, height and weight
Performing ECGs
NHS Health Checks and lifestyle reviews
Supporting chronic disease management clinics
Urine testing and processing clinical samples
Wound care and other clinical tasks within competence and training
Support Practice Nurses and GPs with patient care and clinical procedures
Prepare and maintain clinical rooms, ensuring equipment and supplies are available
Provide support during minor surgery clinics when required
Maintain accurate patient records using the practice clinical system
Ensure confidentiality, infection prevention and safeguarding procedures are followed
Work effectively as part of the multidisciplinary primary care team
Participate in training and development opportunities
About us
Coalbrook Surgery is in the village of Pontyberem, equidistant from the towns of Carmarthen and Llanelli and is part of the Amman Gwendraeth Cluster. It is a well established, friendly Practice, currently consisting of 3 GP Partners who are supported by an excellent nursing team and an enthusiastic, competent administrative team.

Person specification
Qualifications
Essential
- Care Certificate
- Previous experience in a healthcare environment (GP practice, hospital, care home, community care, outpatient clinic, etc.)
- Good understanding of:
- Confidentiality and information governance
- Infection prevention and control
- Safeguarding adults and children
- Basic life support (BLS/CPR)
- Health and safety
Desirable
- NVQ Level 2 or Level 3 in Health and Social Care (or equivalent)
- Clinical skills training, such as:
- Venepuncture (phlebotomy) certificate
- ECG training
- Blood pressure and clinical observation.
- Specimen handling
- Experience with GP clinical systems such as EMIS Web
Experience
Essential
- Previous experience working as a Healthcare Assistant in a GP practice, NHS or healthcare setting
- Good communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to provide compassionate and professional patient care
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Understanding of confidentiality and infection control
Desirable
- GP practice experience
- Phlebotomy and ECG experience
- Experience using clinical systems such as EMIS
