University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust is looking to recruit a Fixed term Locum Stroke consultants as part of a planned expansion of the team based at Royal Derby Hospital.

Forward-thinking and innovative, the team is recognised as a Primary Stroke centre with a strong research emphasis. We provide a full range of patient-focused services, including hyper-acute & acute stroke care, inpatient rehabilitation and early supported discharge. We also deliver a comprehensive TIA service.

Working closely with colleagues across the Trust within radiology, neurology, vascular surgery and critical care, we aim for the highest standards of patient care across both sites.

We have the flexibility to provide a bespoke job plan that encompasses your academic, teaching or research interests.

We can also offer an annualised job plan, LTFT, relocation and incentive packages.

Main duties of the job

The Stroke Centre provides Stroke & TIA services for University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust. The geographical area served is wide and the population diverse. We currently treat around 1400 stroke patients per year.

There are currently 13 stroke specialist consultants within the Centre, supported by a team of resident doctors in training grades, Clinical Nurse Specialists, and a well established multidisciplinary team of stroke specific allied health professionals. Our core clinical team is enhanced by a dedicated Neuroradiology team, and a nationally recognised Vascular Radiology service. The regional vascular surgery unit is co-located with the Stroke Centre; the neurovascular MDT provides rapid access to carotid surgery enabling surgical treatment of carotid lesions within 2 weeks of symptom onset. TIA clinics run daily with 6 days a week with access to vascular imaging and relevant neuroradiology.

Job responsibilities

The Job Plan will be a prospective agreement that sets out the consultants duties, responsibilities & objectives for the coming year. It will cover all aspects of the consultants professional practice including clinical work, teaching, research, education & managerial responsibilities. It will provide a clear schedule of commitments, both internal & external. In addition, it will include personal objectives, including details of their link to wider service objectives, & details of the support required by the consultant to fulfil the job plan & the objectives.

We offer bespoke job plans within the specialty with a view to accommodating individual interests.

Provisional assessment of Programmed Activities in Job Plan:For a full-time contract: Direct Clinical Care: 10 PAs on average per week(includes clinical activity, clinically related activity, predictable & unpredictable emergency work) Supporting Professional Activities: 1.5 PAs on average per week(includes CPD, audit, teaching & research)

There is a 1 in 10 on-call commitment including weekends (0.826 PA) for providing an out-of-hours emergency service, on a shared basis with other Consultants within the Department.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • MBBS / MBChB or equivalent
  • MRCP or equivalent higher qualification
  • Full GMC Registration with a license to practise
  • Life Support Qualifications (ALS)

Desirable

  • GMC Specialist Register for Geriatrics, Neurology, Rehabilitation Medicine or Acute Medicine Specialty OR within 6 months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) at time of interview OR If applying for Full GMC Registration and Licence to Practice simultaneously with a Portfolio Pathway (formerly CESR) application, supporting documentary evidence must be provided at interview, to confirm an application has been submitted and is under consideration by the GMC.

  • Additional higher medical/scientific degree relevant to the specialty
Managerial

Essential

  • Evidence of ability to advise on efficient & smooth running of the Stroke & TIA service
  • Experience of audit & management

Desirable

  • Attended a management/leadership course
Teaching Experience, Audit and Research

Essential

  • Evidence and experience of supervising and teaching resident doctors and medical students
  • Experience of and commitment to clinical audit and/or Quality Improvement Projects (QIP)
  • Evidence of relevant academic and research achievements relevant to the specialty
  • Experience of teaching clinical skills
  • Evidence and ability to assess and apply evidence-based research into every day clinical practice
  • Evidence of ability to supervise audit

Desirable

  • Specific teaching qualification
  • Publications in peer-reviewed journals
  • Postgraduate research degree, PhD, MD etc.
  • Experience of teaching basic clinical skills to under-graduates
  • Experience of enrolling & consenting patients into trials; ICH-GCP qualification
  • Attended a recognised teaching training course
  • Experience of teaching basic clinical skills to under-graduates
  • Evidence of ability to supervise research
  • Evidence of ability to supervise postgraduate research
Clinical Knowledge and Skills

Essential

  • Evidence of independent clinical practice
  • Experienced in making clinical decisions and managing risk.
  • Evidence of ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team & share clinical responsibilities.

Desirable

  • 1 year NHS experience
  • Comprehensive technical competence and experience in Stroke & TIA service delivery
  • Interest in an area of the specialty complimentary to existing consultants
Language and Communication Skills

  • Experience of formal presentations
  • Evidence of ability to work as part of an MDT, sharing administrative duties
