Job summary

The post holder will work as part of a diverse and multidisciplinary Medical Equipment Management Service team to ensure the safe use of medical devices across the Trust. The post holder will carry out acceptance testing, servicing and repair of complex medical equipment and devices. They will take part in workshop rotas and timetables and maintain records of all completed work timely and accurately on the comprehensive equipment management information technology system. Where necessary the post holder will undertake training to develop, upskill and fulfil the evolving needs of the role.

Main duties of the job

Technical

Following standard operating procedures, carry out the following on complex electrical and mechanical

Medical equipment:

  • Formal acceptance tests
  • Performance tests
  • Planned Preventative Maintenance
  • Servicing / Routine maintenance

Under the supervision of senior technicians, analyse and diagnose faults in complex electrical and mechanical medical equipment and calibrate and operate test equipment correctly.

  • Carry out electrical safety testing of equipment.

Job responsibilities

Communication

  • Provide technical information and feedback to clinical users on the service and repair of equipment.
  • Communicate with equipment suppliers and manufacturers regarding maintenance and repair of medical equipment.
  • Collaborate with other technical staff in the maintenance of medical equipment.

Clinical

  • Attend clinical areas to carry out routine maintenance of medical equipment, either alone or with colleagues

Quality Control

  • Adhere to the processes and procedures as described in the quality manual.
  • Comment on proposed changes to departmental policies and procedures.

Records

  • Accurately and clearly record work done on the medical equipment management database.
  • Check that information provided on equipment is correct, that procedures for adding and updating information is followed and any anomalies are reported to the team leader.

Time Management

  • Plans own workload and prioritises breakdown requests allocated to self.
  • Organises routine maintenance duties allocated to self.

Physical

  • Assist with the movement and transport of equipment and packages, of up to 20kgs, to and from clinical areas, and between MEMS sites.
  • Carry out repetitive equipment testing which may require working in awkward positions where testing carried out on-site.

Person specification

Education and Qualifications

Essential

  • Professional electronics knowledge acquired through training to diploma equivalent level e.g. BTEC, HNC, short course.
Knowledge and Experience

Essential

  • Good knowledge of electronics with skills for analysing and diagnosing faults in complex equipment.
  • Understanding of the hazards posed by, and precautions needed with: - non-ionising radiation - electricity - medium voltages and currents - biological hazards - workshop hazards - chemical hazards from mercury, cleaning agents, fumes from solvents, glues and so on - tools at elevated temperatures (i.e. soldering iron) - compressed medical gases - handling heavy and delicate equipment.

Desirable

  • Knowledge of medical equipment and its use in the clinical environment.
  • Basic knowledge of relevant legislation, national standards, professional and other guidelines (EN 13485, DB 2006, IEC 60601-1, Medical Devices Regulations, Health and Safety).
Skills and Competencies

Essential

  • Able to communicate technical equipment related information to technical and non-technical staff, manufacturers and suppliers.
  • Able to follow instructions to perform technical procedures and operate specialised test equipment correctly and safely.
  • Able to prioritise and plan own workload.
  • Able to organise routine maintenance of medical equipment assigned to self.
  • Dexterity, co-ordination & sensory skills for use of precision tools in maintaining delicate equipment.
