Job summary

We have the opportunity to employ a candidate to our Ophthalmic technician role for 30 hours a week.

The role is highly specialised with diagnostic machinery running within ophthalmology, previous knowledge welcomed but not essential as training will be given.

Will also spend time on clinic learning how to do eye tests for patients which feed into the technician role.

The salary starts at a Band 2 while training then moves up to Band 3 upon completion. Unfortunately, this role does not meet the criteria required to qualify for sponsorship.

This role is very fast paced and individuals will be on their feet for long hours all day.

Main duties of the job

Performing tests on patients following the appropriate training and sign off within the department against our competency booklets which are provided.

  • Completion of Visual field tests
  • Completion of Biometries
  • Support colleagues within the team
  • Work within Casualty clinic setting
  • Run visions lane within Casualty
  • Administration of eye drops
  • Completion of eye pressure tests
  • Main Communicator with patients undergoing diagnostic tests and treatment
  • Assist patients, where needed
  • Rotation into Eye Outpatients to learn and complete Optos, OCT tests

Qualifications

Essential

  • Level 1 Literacy and Numeracy (GCSE English and Maths Grade D-G)
  • Care Certificate

Desirable

  • NVQ in healthcare Level 2
Knowledge, Training & Experience

Essential

  • Understanding of the importance of maintaining confidentiality
  • Understanding of the importance of Equal Opportunities Issues
  • Understanding of the importance of Health & Safety issues
  • A genuine commitment to caring for people with visual impairment

Desirable

  • Willingness to undertake developing roles following specific training as the service changes
  • Basic knowledge of the structure of the eye with a willingness to improve knowledge
Skills & Abilities

  • To demonstrate an understanding of the importance of team working and the ability of working within a multi- disciplinary team
  • Ability to work late shifts and weekends as part of 7-day rota
  • Be able to organise own workload
  • Be able to work unsupervised and use own initiative
  • Able to communicate effectively with other staff, patients and relatives, both face to face and on the telephone

  • Venepuncture skills (desirable) or willingness to learn
