Job summary

To ensure the management and provision of a safe, efficient and effective Portering and Postal service to agreed standards and within financial constraints throughout the Trust. Responsible for assisting the Facilities Service Manager with the operational management and delivery of portering and postal services The Portering Officer (AFC Band 5) position based across Hull Royal Infirmary and Castle Hill Hospital assists the Facilities Service Manager in delivering safe, efficient 24/7 Portering and Postal services. Operational duties include managing shift rotas, direct staff supervision, recruitment, appraisals, budget monitoring, and ensuring strict compliance with health, safety and infection control standards. The role also involves utilising departmental software and overseeing safe patient and equipment transport. Applicants require an NVQ Level 3 in Leadership and Management (or equivalent experience), at least three years of experience in an NHS or customer-focused environment, a valid UK driving license, and the physical capability to transport patients and heavy equipment.

Main duties of the job

  • Oversee daily operations, including rota planning, 24/7 shift coverage, performance monitoring, and task prioritisation.

  • Direct, train, and mentor supervisors and portering staff, managing HR processes, attendance, and appraisals.

  • Ensure strict adherence to health and safety, infection control, and patient movement standards, completing incident reports and risk assessments.

  • Support budget monitoring, utilise departmental software, and generate activity reports to drive service improvements.
