Role Overview
Rider Levett Bucknall (RLB) is looking to expand its MEP design team, and we are looking for a proactive, focused and reliable Senior or Associate Mechanical Engineer to support the delivery of Mechanical building services design and verification on a wide range of schemes. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to a wide variety of projects, working closely with aspiring junior and senior engineers, multidisciplinary colleagues, and clients to deliver robust, coordinated and compliant design solutions.
You will be responsible for delivering day-to-day mechanical engineering design on live projects, from feasibility through to detailed design and construction, and work closely with electrical engineering colleagues. You will undertake site surveys including verification of systems, produce calculations, coordinate mechanical systems with other disciplines and develop technical drawings and specifications that meet project requirements. This is a delivery-focused role suited to someone who enjoys working in detail and wants to grow within a supportive and technically driven team.
Role Responsibilities
Assist with the day to day management of a team of junior and senior engineers and help to shape their career path including the route to chartership
- Undertake mechanical engineering design for building services projects, including heating, ventilation, cooling, and domestic water systems, plus develop specifications for specialists such as BMS etc
- Prepare and check calculations, drawings and specifications for concept, developed and technical design stages
- Coordinate mechanical services with other disciplines (architectural, structural, electrical, sustainability)
- Work closely with project leads, junior and senior engineers, building surveyors, quantity surveyors and project managers to ensure technical compliance and quality assurance
- Support the development of design packages for tender and construction, including responding to contractor queries
- Contribute to internal technical reviews and team knowledge sharing
- Use tools such as IES, AutoCAD, and Revit to develop coordinated and accurate design outputs
- Carry out surveys of buildings to review and provide commentary on the existing mechanical installations
- Attend site during construction to provide mechanical construction monitoring duties
- Undertake periodic clerk of works duties and asset capture surveys to sites across the North
Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate will be working as part of a team delivering customer service excellence, demonstrate a positive proactive approach to the role with good commercial results and encompass a realistic selection of the following qualifications and attributes:
- Manage a team of engineers to deliver a quality service to clients and colleagues
- Demonstrable experience in delivering mechanical designs within a consultancy or design-and-build environment
- Strong technical skills and familiarity with design tools (e.g. Revit, AutoCAD, IES would also be beneficial)
- A strong understanding of UK Building Regulations, CIBSE guides, and industry standards
- Organised, detail-oriented, and capable of managing multiple deadlines and other engineers
- A collaborative approach and willingness to learn from experienced team members
Qualifications
- Degree-qualified in Mechanical or Building Services Engineering
- Ideally working towards professional registration (CIBSE or IMechE)
Experience
- Track record in a similar role
- Project design responsibility from feasibility through to detailed design and construction
- Use of relevant MS and design software
