Teacher of Physics
This job in numbers
We are looking for a well-qualified and enthusiastic Teacher of Physics to join our large and highly successful science team. The successful candidate will be expected to be able to teach science at key stage 3 and physics up to A level.
The science department comprises a Head of Chemistry, a Head of Physics and a Head of Biology who lead the science department collaboratively. There are currently four teaching staff in the physics department (including the Head of Physics and the Second in Physics) and one full-time technician.
In Years 7 and 8 all students follow an integrated science course and physics is taught as a separate subject from Year 9. From Year 9, each science discipline is taught by subject specialists and at GCSE the students study either AQA combined science (trilogy) or AQA separate sciences.
Demand for physics in the sixth form is high. Results at A level have been consistently excellent and many students elect to follow a physics or engineering-related course at university. Results at both GCSE and A level are outstanding. In 2026, 87% of all physics GCSE entries were awarded grades 7-9, and 38% were at the very highest 9 grade. For trilogy, 84% of all grades were 7-9. At A level, 50% of entries were awarded A*-A and 100% A*-C.
Extension activities are frequently offered to students, with several pupils entering competitions from the British Physics Olympiad. Students are also encouraged to further their interest in the physical sciences by participating in schemes such as “Arkwright” engineering scholarships, attending lecture days at universities, and occasional in-school talks given by visiting speakers. In previous years we have organised visits abroad, for example to NASA in the USA. Sixth form students also help to run engineering and astrophysics clubs for younger pupils.
The Science Department has thirteen laboratories. There is a science staffroom and each member of staff has an allocated work area. Each laboratory in the school is equipped with a data projector and a networked computer. ICT is widely used to effectively enhance teaching and learning.
The appointee will be expected to teach science at KS3 and physics at KS4 and KS5. They should be able to deliver the subject in an engaging way that will actively encourage real enthusiasm for the subject and a knowledge of the importance of physics and science in today’s society.
We are open, supportive and flexible with high-quality CPD opportunities through our Teaching School Hubs and Professional Development Institute.
Please see the attached job description and person specification for a full list of responsibilities and accountabilities.
