Public Health Wales are recruiting a Welsh Translation Coordinator for a 3 month period (while the role holder takes a career break). An overview of the role is below.

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced translator to gain experience of managing a Welsh translation service for a period. There is opportunity to work full time, part time or as a job share for the 3 months and secondment or fixed-term opportunities will be considered.

The Translation Coordinator is expected to work effectively with colleagues across the organisation to manage translation work and work closely and professionally with external translation suppliers to manage contracts and oversee returned work. The post holder will also be able to provide a translation service from Welsh to English and from English to Welsh as needed.

There is flexibility in terms of the exact work pattern, and the job is suitable for home working.

The job holder will have fluency in both Welsh and English.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will provide a specialist translation service from English to Welsh andWelsh to English to enable the Trust to implement the principle that itwill treat Welsh and English on an equal basis. The post holder will lead on theimplementation of a comprehensive programme of delivery for the Trust's translation service, taking a proactive strategic approach to ensure compliance with theWelsh Language Standards under the Welsh Language (Wales) Measure 2011.

The post holder will provide the strategic guidance in improving translation services, ensuringperformance indicators are upheld and addressing any shortfalls. The post holderwill be required to maintain the service's information systems, providingassurance to the Trust that controls are in place to ensure legislative compliance.

Job responsibilities

Responsibility for the strategic and operational management of the translation service on a day-to-day basis

Continuously scrutinize the Trusts Translation Programme to ensure timely distribution and allocation of work

Provide and receive highly complex and sensitive information ensuring confidentiality at all times

Analyse performance of the service in relation to internal objectives and external indicators

Using specialist knowledge acquired over a significant period, propose changes to current practice that will facilitate the systems operation by producing specific procedures that will potentially impact on the organisation as a whole

Person specification

Qualification and Experience

Essential

  • Degree in Welsh and/or Post Graduate diploma level training in translation
  • Experience of working as a translator gained either in the workplace or as part of a training programme
  • Experience of reviewing translation work of others
  • Word Processing/working knowledge of Translation Memory packages

Desirable

  • Member of Cymdeithas Cyfieithwyr Cymru
  • Experience of leading a service
  • An understanding of the NHS
Skills and knowledge

Essential

  • Ability to cope with considerable work pressure at times
  • Good understanding of the Welsh Language (Wales) Measure 2011 and the impact of the Welsh Language Standards on the organisation
