Job summary

We are seeking a motivated, compassionate and enthusiastic Practice Nurse to join our friendly and supportive general practice team for a fixed-term period of 12 months, covering maternity leave.

This is an excellent opportunity for a nurse looking for a rewarding role within a supportive, forward-thinking practice that is passionate about delivering high-quality, personalised care.

At Greenway Community Practice, we place great importance on continuity of care and personal GP lists, ensuring patients have the opportunity to build a relationship with their own GP wherever possible. We are equally committed to providing excellent access to appointments, combining continuity with responsive and accessible care for our patients.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will primarily undertake routine treatment room nursing duties, including:

  • Wound care and dressings
  • Cervical cytology screening
  • Adult and childhood immunisations
  • Health promotion and lifestyle advice
  • Other routine treatment room procedures
  • Working collaboratively with GPs, nurses, pharmacists and the wider multidisciplinary team
  • Maintaining accurate clinical records and contributing to QOF, audit and other practice requirements

Greenway Community Practice is based in Southmead, Bristol, a vibrant and diverse community with excellent local amenities. The practice is situated on the Southmead Development Trust site, alongside a community gym and cafe, with a David Lloyd private gym next to the practice and Horfield Sports Centre approximately one mile away. The area is also well served by a range of local parks and sporting facilities.

You will become part of a strong and experienced multidisciplinary clinical team, comprising of

5 GP Partners

5 Salaried GPs

3 Clinical Pharmacists

4 Practice Nurses

4 Healthcare Assistants

A Paramedic Practitioner

A First Contact Physiotherapist

We are a popular training practice with an excellent staff retention rate. We hold regular clinical meetings and make a conscious effort to maintain strong relationships across the team, with time built into our working day to interact and support one another.

With a list size of over 12,500 patients, Greenway is a busy and vibrant practice, but we have worked hard to ensure that we never lose our community feel, team spirit or sense of fun.

Job responsibilities

To practice unsupervised and independently in accordance with the NMC Code of Conduct and within individual competencies, with reference to Practice guidelines and referring on to other team members as appropriate

To perform routine tasks related to patient care, to include:

  • Wound / leg ulcer care management (including doppler examination)
  • Undertaking cervical cytology
  • Ear irrigation
  • Injections and immunisations (including childhood immunisations)
  • Providing a comprehensive travel advice and vaccination service
  • Obtaining pathology samples, swabs, urine, blood etc.
  • Initiate and perform ECGs
  • New patient checks
  • Spirometry
  • To chaperone GPs and assist patients (where appropriate) during clinical procedures
  • To assist with minor surgical procedures as necessary
  • To provide general and specific health screening and health education to the practice population with referral to GPs as necessary
  • To advise patients on general health care and minor ailments
  • To order and maintain adequate supplies of stock (including vaccinations) and equipment relating to patient care
  • To be aware of the need for regular maintenance of clinical equipment and report potential problems with clinical equipment to Senior Nurse Manager
  • To maintain accurate documentation of care and utilisation of IT
  • To undertake administrative tasks relevant to patient care and individual CDM clinics
  • To advise Senior Nurse of potential problems or errors within the range of assigned tasks

To develop the care of patients with complex health needs, which may involve identification and assessment of such patients and the subsequent introduction and use of technical and specialist nursing treatments

Qualifications

Essential

  • We are looking for a nurse who
  • Is a Registered Nurse with current NMC registration
  • Is confident undertaking a range of treatment room duties
  • Has experience of working in primary care and/or chronic disease management
  • Has excellent communication skills and a genuinely patient-focused approach
  • Is able to work confidently and independently while being a supportive team member
  • Brings positivity, enthusiasm, compassion and a good sense of humour to their work
