Job summary

Band 7 School Nurse Team Leader - Term Time Only

We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (SCPHN) School Nurse to join our School Nursing Service as a Band 7 Team Leader.

The successful candidate will provide strong clinical and operational leadership to the School Nursing Team, supporting the delivery of a safe, high-quality and responsive service for our diverse population of school-aged children, young people and their families.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated leader with a strong public health and safeguarding focus, who is committed to developing staff, improving service delivery and promoting positive health and wellbeing outcomes for children and young people.

Main duties of the job

The Band 7 School Nurse Team Leader will provide clinical and operational leadership to the School Nursing Team, ensuring the safe, effective and high-quality delivery of the Healthy Child Programme and universal public health services to school-aged children and young people. The post holder will be responsible for team management, staff supervision and development, safeguarding and clinical oversight, caseload management and achievement of service KPIs, while promoting evidence-based practice and addressing health inequalities. They will work collaboratively with schools, partner agencies and other professionals to support vulnerable children and families, drive service improvement and ensure services are responsive to the needs of the local population. You will be responsible for a defined caseload of secondary and primary schools, overseeing the delivery of the Healthy Child Programme (5-19). This will involve working in collaboration with parents/carers, education and other multiagency professionals.

Job responsibilities

The Band 7 School Nurse Team Leader will be part of the Whittington Health School Nursing Service based in Haringey. The post holder will provide clinical and operational leadership to the School Nursing Team, ensuring the safe, effective and high-quality delivery of universal health services to children and young people across designated schools.

Reporting to the Haringey School Nurse Locality Manager, the Team Leader will support the ongoing development of the service and work collaboratively with School Nursing colleagues, schools, partner agencies and key stakeholders to ensure the effective delivery of theHealthy Child Programme, safeguarding responsibilities and local public health priorities.

Main responsibilities include:

  • Provide day-to-day leadership and management to the School Nursing Team.
  • Provide clinical and safeguarding oversight, supporting staff in the management and escalation of complex cases.
  • Lead and support the effective delivery of the Healthy Child Programme and universal public health services.
  • Provide staff with regular management and professional supervision, appraisal and development.
  • Oversee caseload management and allocation, ensuring services are safe, responsive and focused on the needs of children, young people and families.
  • Monitor and support achievement of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), service specifications and public health priorities.
  • Promote evidence-based practice, quality improvement and the reduction of health inequalities.
  • Work collaboratively with schools, health professionals, local authority services and other partner agencies to improve outcomes for children and young people.
  • Support service development, clinical governance, audit and continuous improvement.

Applicants must hold a Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (SCPHN) qualification in School Nursing. This is an essential requirement for the position, and applicants who do not hold this qualification will not be shortlisted.

Essential

  • RSCN or RN (Child Branch) or Equivalent
  • Specialist Community Public Health School Nursing (SCPHN) qualification

  • Management experience in a health service setting.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing in an effective way with people from a variety of backgrounds and different ages
  • Willingness to lead and support management of change.
  • High levels of clinical skills, with the ability to identify, respond to and evaluate health needs, including the delivery of public health programmes.
  • Ability to manage other members of staff and delegate work appropriately and safely.

Knowledge & Experience

  • Knowledge of current legislation and national guidance relating to children.
  • Ability to apply research to practice
  • Understanding of the safeguarding process and child protection procedures, clinical governance arrangements and the ability to make decisions in these areas.
